Beechcraft D175 Staggerwing
The Story
Introduced in 1933. Originally designed for executive business travel. The upper wing is staggered behind the lower wing creating the instantly identifiable feature. It has a fabric covered fuselage, over a welded steel tubular frame. Each staggerwing was custom built by hand.
It proved popular as an air racer and lay claim to the following achievements:-
- Won the 1933 Texaco Trophy race.
- A British diplomat flew around the world in 1935 ( a total of 21,332mls)
- Winner of the 1936 Bendix Trophy
- Attained the Women’s speed record, 1932. (203 at a record altitude of over 30,000ft)
- Named by ‘Plane & Pilot’ (March 2003) magazine as one of the ALL TIME Top 10 favourite aircraft.
- AOPA Pilot magazine (April 2007) members voted the Staggerwing as, ‘the most beautiful airplane’.
